Pauline and Marco Markowitz were my great-grandparents. Marco sailed to the United States on the vessel S.S. Blücher on December 5, 1902, landing on Ellis Island leaving Pauline, who was 8 months pregnant, with two small children. Two years after her third baby was born (the youngest child was my grandmother Helen) Pauline followed with her three small children. Marco and Pauline left Iasi, Romania because of anti-semitic violence. Marco had a haberdashery store in Iasi Romania which was either ransacked or burned down according to my mother. The photo below is of the
family after immigrating to New York.
