Welcome to the Weissman and Marcovici family c.1897-1950s

Pauline and Marco Markowitz were my great-grandparents. This site is paired with my story (see link above for "A Romanian Jewish Family") about my research and how I found more information about my relatives in my great-grandmother's photo album.  Work on this site started in 2019 by Julia Herzog (myself) in order to share the Weissman and Marcovici photo album which contains a collection of family photographs dating from 1897 onwards.  My research on my family is forming part of my PhD at the University of Victoria exploring the fragmentation of my family and the loss of contact with relatives during and after the Shoah. I feel a special connection to Pauline as my mother often mentioned how she wished she had named me after Pauline . (Since Pauline was still alive when I was born, based on Ashkenazi Jewish convention I could not be named after her).  The photographs currently being presented are of some of Pauline and Marco's family members in Romania and the United States from approximately 1897-1950s.  Once Pauline and Marco immigrated they changed their names from Paulina Marcovici (nee Weisman) and Marcu Marcovici to Pauline and Marco Markowitz.  The Marcovici family lived in Iasi (Jassy), Romania until the early 1900s.
