1798: Napoleon invades Egypt.

1817: Colossal Head of Ramses II or younger Memnon arrives at the British Museum, inspiring Percy Shelley's poem “Ozymandias.” 

1821:  Egyptian Hall exhibition in Piccadilly.

1822: Translation of the Rosetta Stone.

1823: British Museum acquires the Mummy of Hor, which features the lotus design later seen in The Girls’ Own Paper Vol. 10 No. 498. 

1851: Crystal Palace Exhibition features an Egyptian Hall.

1859 -1869: Construction of the Suez Canal.

1877: Transportation of Cleopatra’s Needle from Egypt to London.

1881: Publication of "Terra-Cotta Painting" by Mary Randolph-Lichfield in The Girl's Own Paper Vol. 2 No. 54 (Jan 8). 

1882: British Occupation of Egypt begins. Amelia Edwards and Reginald Stuart Poole found the Egypt Exploration Fund. Publication of “Samplers Past and Present” by Dora De Blaquiere in The Girl's Own Paper Vol. 3 No. 128 (10 Jun). Publication of “Fans, and How to Decorate Them” in The Girl's Own Paper Vol. 3 No. 133 (15 Jul). 

1883: Egypt Exploration Fund explores the Nile Delta. 

1887:  Publication of “Embroidery and Lacy” by Frances Mabel Robinson in Atalanta Vol. 1 (Oct). Publication of “Art Needlework” by Helen Marion Burnside in The Girl's Own Paper Vol. 9 No. 408 (22 Oct).

1888: The National Gallery purchases ancient Egyptian mummy portraits from WM. Flinders Petrie, which are featured in The Girl’s Own Paper Vol. 11 No. 526. Publication of “The Decoration of China” by Cosmo Monkhouse in Atalanta (Sept). 

1889: Publication of “Flowers in History” article on lotuses in the The Girls’ Own Paper Vol. 10 No. 498 (13 Jul). 

1890: Publication of “Mr. WM. Flinders Petrie’s Discoveries in ‘The Fayum, Egypt’ in The Girl’s Own Paper Vol. 11 No. 528, 526, 532 (8 Feb - 8 Mar)

1897: Publication of Atalanta Vol. 10, containing “The Fan” by E. Taunton Williams (Feb). 

1922: Discovery of the Tutankhamen’s tomb.
