Title
Letter from Gert Berliner's Parents
Description
Photograph of a letter written to Gert Berliner by his parents, Paul and Sophie. The letter is currently on display at the Jewish Museum in Berlin in the Axis of the Holocaust passageway (April 15, 2019).

The letter is titled: "My Beloved Gert!" and captioned: "In 1939, at the age of fifteen, Gert Berliner was sent on a children's transport to Sweden. His parents, Paul and Sophie Berliner, stayed behind in Berlin. In late December 1942, they wrote this letter to their son: 'It's been three and a half years since you left. When we said goodbye at the train station, I definitely thought that we would be reunited in two years at the latest, but unfortunately... let's not lose heart.' Paul and Sophie Berliner were deported to Auschwitz in May 1943 and murdered there. In 1947 Gert Berliner immigrated from Sweden to the United States, where he became a painter, filmmaker and photographer." - Jewish Museum Berlin, Gift of Gert Berliner
