Introduction to This Page

This Omeka page looks to explore Enoch Arden, which is a narrative poem what was published in 1864 and written by poet laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson. As is, the story of Enoch Arden centers around a lost fisherman, with the same name as the poem, who becomes stranded on an island after he left his behind his wife and family in the hopes of providing a better life them. Once returned home after years of absence, Enoch finds that life has moved on and his wife has moved onto marrying another man, who is also one of Enoch’s oldest friends. Unable to bring himself to confront his wife, Enoch dies of what appears to be a heart attack which was brought on by grief.
          Although possible to spend an entire page on the content of Enoch Arden, this Omeka page will focus on the books as physical objects and will look to address the objective qualities that make it unique. While the primary focus for this page will be on the book as a physical property, it will be necessary to address the history and social surroundings of the book, in order to better understand its impact and importance on the modern world. Indeed, it will be shown that both Alfred Lord Tennyson and the effects of  Enoch Arden are still being felt to this day.
          In the following sections, this page will focus on the history and social settings that surrounded the writing and publication of Enoch Arden, the history of its author, Alfred Lord Tennyson as well as look closely at the qualities that make these books special. As is, this page aims to explain the story behind the book in an attempt to better understand how a book can affect the world.
