Virginia Woolf notes that “on or about December 1910 human character changed,” attributing an essential shift in humanity to a specific moment in time. She explores this observation in her experimental novel, set at the beginning of the twentieth century and first published in 1927 by Woolf’s printing house in London. Following a group of family members—the Ramsays—and the people in their lives, Woolf explores the relationships among social connections, knowledge, and the meaning of life. The most prominent characters undertake different projects in which they try to find meaning in their lives and make sense of their place in the world: Mr Ramsay, a metaphysical philosophy project; Lily Briscoe, a painting; and Mrs Ramsay, the creation and design of domestic spaces.
